Abstract

“The American Society for Quality defines ‘social responsibility’ as people and organizations behaving and conducting business ethically and with sensitivity toward social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues”. (ASQ Wire – 3/8/06)

The traditional point of view reserved social responsibility for government agencies, non-profits, religious institutions and other elements of the public sector. Our featured speaker advocates sound social policy as a competitive priority that enables “for profit” entities to improve their bottom line. Businesses that establish, maintain and improve social responsibility will realize the following benefits:

 ·         Enhanced brand name recognition in the marketplace

·         Improved reputation as a corporate citizen in local communities

·         Meeting or exceeding forthcoming industry standards

·         Compliance with government regulations

·         Consistency with LEAN principles as applied to reuse and recycling

Social responsibility is a topic that is important to all employees from the CEO to the weekend maintenance crew. We invite you to join Michael D. Ford as he presents an interactive discussion that includes the ASQ’s involvement in administering a technical advisory group (TAG) on social responsibility. This TAG is working with ISO technical committee 207, which is writing the standard for ISO 26000 which will contain guidance for various stakeholder groups: industry, government, labor, consumers and nongovernmental organizations
